When Donald Harrison, Jr. — the Big Chief of the Congo Nation Afro-New Orleans Cultural Group — came to WBGO for a studio session, he obviously didn't take the "Old Town Road." Rather, he was stuck on the West Side Highway and in the Holland Tunnel for an hour.
Nevertheless, he and pianist Dan Kaufman, bassist John Benitez and drummer Joe Dyson brought the fire when they played that Lil Nas X hit. They also swung in straight-ahead bop fashion on Donald's "One For Bird," chilled out with his "Mr. Cool Breeze," and took us right back to the mid-'70s with Eddie Henderson's "Sandcastle Headhunter,"which will be on his new album.
Whether or not you can make it to Smoke Jazz Club this weekend to experience them live, enjoy this studio session from Donald Harrison and Nouveau Swing!
