A new play in Manhattan tells the story of a Baltimore man who encouraged Jews to convert to Christianity during the Holocaust. The play was written and is performed in Yiddish play because its protagonist was a real-life character who translated the New Testament into Yiddish.

The Gospel According to Chaim is based on the life of missionary Chaim Einspruch, who was born into a Hasidic family in Poland and “found” Christianity before immigrating to the United States in 1913. Einspruch eventually translated the New Testament into Yiddish and self-published it in 1941.

WBGO’s Jon Kalish has the story of The Gospel According to Chaim.
