Mayor Adams' administration is announcing help for New Yorkers to build more housing units on their properties and help with city's severe housing shortage.
The Adams administration is now offering four million dollars in grant money for qualified homeowners for a pilot program to build ADU's as well as a portal that cuts through red tape. ADU's are additional housing units on someone's property, such as using the attic, backyard or basement. Queens homeowner Sade Singh is a proponent of the program.
"The ADU program represents more than just additional housing. It's a lifeline for people like me. It provides an essential source of income that can make the difference of being able to stay in your home or losing your home."
There has been some opposition to ADU's from local community leaders worried they would result in overdevelopment.
