City details residential trash bin requirements

WBGO News

New York City is unveiling residential trash bin requirements in an effort to do away with trash bags on the streets and lower the rat population.

Property owners in buildings that have up to nine residential units who use trash bags will be forced to buy bins by November 12th. Those who have bins now will have two more years before they have to purchase the official NYC Bin.

"Durable, equipped with wheels and a secure rodent resistant latching lid is the cheapest bin of its quality available with prices below 50 dollars.

Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch says with this new mandate, 70 percent of all trash in New York City will be covered by containerization requirements. Businesses already have a trash bin mandate in place.
