New York City will have its first woman police commissioner in January. Mayor elect Eric Adams today announced who will be next to lead the NYPD when he takes office. Keechant Sewell who is the current Nassau County Chief of Detectives and brings more than 25 years of experience in policing.

“We are in a pivotal moment in New York as our city faces the twin challenges of public safety and police accountability. They are not mutually exclusive.”

The first woman to head the department says she is in favor of bringing back plain clothes-anti crime units and says lower level crimes need to be enforced when appropriate.

“We will arrest violent criminals, take guns off the street and then build the cases to keep help them off.”
