New York City officials are backing a ban on fitness group classes despite complaints from gym owners.

A group of fitness studio owners are suing the de Blasio administration. They say the ban on group workout classes because of coronavirus is unfair compared to other allowed activities. However, one of the city’s top health advisors, Doctor Jay Varma says there are outbreaks tied to group workouts in other parts of the world.

“Like any type of setting, there are certainly ways to try to make things safer but we also know that there are certain activities that make it really difficult to make it completely safe.”

That’s because he says masks can get wet, there’s heavy breathing in what’s an indoor group setting.
