April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and WBGO is celebrating by showcasing some of the talent from local programs.

The Juilliard Jazz Max Roach Ensemble is led by saxophonist Roxy Coss, now in her first year on the faculty in Jazz Studies at Juilliard. As Coss explained to Bill Daughtry during their session on Afternoon Jazz, the group performs music in the spirit of Max Roach, rather than focusing strictly on his compositions.
The performance began with "Kathleen's Theme," by Les McCann and Eddie Harris, and moved on to an untitled ballad composed by saxophonist Jarien Jamanila, as a dedication to Roy Hargrove.
