Amy Cervini Explores a Panoply of Emotions on Her New Solo Album, Now Playing on Radar
Amy Cervini sings all across the musical spectrum. She has recorded tributes to Blossom Dearie and country songs. She's sung shows for children and shows that I've called "delightfully naughty." She also often sings alongside Melissa Stylianou and Hilary Gardner in the trio Duchess, tackling everything from jazz standards and pop to the astonishingly fast and hip vocal arrangements of the Boswell Sisters. Having been a saxophonist gives Amy much more improvisational chops as a vocalist.
Amy's newest album, No One Ever Tells You, offers a mosaic of songs inspired by the panoply of emotions that she feels as a woman, a wife, a mother, and an artist. "They are songs of love, struggle, and empowerment," she says. Songs from Sinatra's "Please Be Kind," Astaire's "One for My Baby," Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" and Bessie Smith's "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" to Lyle Lovett's "God Will," Blossom Dearie's "Bye-Bye Country Boy," Ray Charles' "Hit the Road, Jack," and Amy's own "You Know Who."
"No One Ever Tells You is about heartbreak and loneliness," says Amy, "but for me the message is much greater than that. It's about honesty and truth. Listening to others and not being afraid to be vulnerable and open is a lesson I've learned through this journey."
