NYC Takes Step To Diversify Upper Ranks Of NYPD

Wikimedia Commons

New York City is increasing its effort to diversify the police department.
Mayor de Blasio has signed an executive order that requires at least one candidate from an underrepresented race be interviewed for each available high ranking NYPD position. Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson is the former chair for the committee on Public Safety.

“This effort will improve fairness and equity in our system and ensure that all candidates considered for discretionary promotions is inclusive.”

The City has made other efforts to recruit and hire from underserved communities but this order focuses on upper ranks. The order is modeled after a similar rule in the NFL.
