Newark Public Schools has plans to launch a new curriculum that will prepare students for a career in teaching.

Superintendent Roger Leon says The Teachers Academy is partnering with two respected institutions to help their plans unfold.

“Montclair State University will be the higher education partner, and the American Federation of Teachers will be the professional organization partnering.”

Aspiring student teachers will pair up with professional educators that offer support.  The High Schoolers gain experience teaching elementary grade classes.

The radio and higher education worlds are mourning the loss of Richard Hinchliffe of Glen Ridge, New Jersey.  Hinchliffe passed away earlier this month from glioblastoma.  He was 68.

Dick Hinchliffe had a distinguished career in journalism.  He was the former News Director at WNYC and worked for Bloomberg Radio and the Associated Press during his broadcasting career.  You may remember hearing Dick anchoring some newscasts right here at WBGO in 2010 and 2011.

The Civic Information Consortium would allocate $100 million from New Jersey’s sale of two public broadcasting licenses over a five-year span to promote local journalism.

“Right now, New Jersey is suffering from a local news crisis,” said James Thompson with the Free Press Action Fund, a journalism advocacy organization.  “There’s been cutbacks in journalism staffs around the state.  We see this as a way to transform the way people get their news and information.”
