Singer Cyrille Aimée talks with WBGO's Rhonda Hamilton about her recent recordings and performance with the Christian McBride Big Band in the "Sing, Sing, Sing!" concert at NJPAC on November 9. The concert is part of the TD James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival, and Aimée is the 2012 winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, which is also part of the festival. Along with four other finalists, Camille was chosen from hundreds of singers from around the world to perform November 10 at 3 p.m. at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center's Victoria Theater for this year's "Sassy" Award, named in honor of legendary jazz singer and Newark native Sarah Vaughan, and prizes of up to $5,000. She will sing for judges Al Jarreau, Janis Siegel, and Gretchen Parlato, WBGO music director Gary Walker and JAZZ ROOTS producer Larry Rosen.

Camille is a saxophonist, flutist, vocalist, composer and educator. She has performed with jazz and R&B greats such as Dr. Billy Taylor, Chaka Khan, Benny Golson, George Coleman, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Terri Lyne Carrington, Stephanie Mills, Russell Malone, Nicholas Payton, George Benson, Yolanda Adams, Bebe Winans, Lew Tabackin, Alicia Keys, India Arie, Dave Valentine, Anthony Hamilton, Eric Benet, Brandy, Missy Elliot and others. Camille leads her own quartet, which has performed at The Kennedy Center, the International Women in Jazz Festival, the Super Jazz Ashdod Israel Festival, The Jazz Gallery and other jazz venues around the world.

WBGO will interview Camille on-air before the competition.

Along with four other finalists, Teira was chosen from hundreds of  singers from around the world to perform November 10 at 3 p.m. at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center's Victoria Theater for this year's "Sassy" Award, named in honor of legendary jazz singer and Newark native Sarah Vaughan, and prizes of up to $5,000. She will sing for judges Al Jarreau, Janis Siegel, and Gretchen Parlato, WBGO music director Gary Walker and JAZZ ROOTS producer Larry Rosen.

A native of Los Angeles, Teira is a senior at UCLA, where she studies jazz voice in the Herb Alpert School of Music's ethnomusicology department. In 2007, she placed second in the National Association for Negro Musicians' Scholarship Competition, and the following year enrolled at Hamilton High School's Music Academy where she joined its award-winning vocal jazz ensemble.  Teira was the only female popular music vocalist in the nation selected for the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts' Young Artist 2010 competition. She received the Bronze medal in the popular voice category and was a semi-finalist for the Presidential Scholar in the Arts.

WBGO Congratulates 2013 Sarah Vaughan Vocal Finalists

WBGO is proud to announce the finalists of the 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition (SVVC): Teira Church, Lydia Harrell, Jazzmeia Horn, Barbra Lica and Camille Thurman. Click on each name to meet these talented young ladies and to hear them sing.

Along with Kate Davis, this year's SVVC "rising star," these five were chosen from hundreds of  singers from around the world. They will perform November 10 at 3 p.m. at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center's Victoria Theater for this year's "Sassy" Award, named in honor of legendary jazz singer and Newark native Sarah Vaughan, and prizes of up to $5,000.

This concert is the crowning event of the TD Bank James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival, which presents concerts at NJPAC and elsewhere in Newark from November 4 through 10. Judges include world-renowned jazz singers Al Jarreau, Janis Siegel, and Gretchen Parlato, WBGO music director Gary Walker and JAZZ ROOTS producer Larry Rosen.

Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition Finalist Ashleigh Smith

Singer Ashleigh Smith talks with WBGO's Monifa Brown about growing up in Lewisville, Texas, her education at the University of North Texas, and performing at the Kennedy Center. Smith is a finalist in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, whose finals will be held on Sunday, October 21 at 3 p.m. at the New Jersey Performance Arts Center in Newark.

The competition is the final event of the inaugural James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival, co-presented by NJPAC and WBGO-FM.
