Next Generation JAM - WBGO Studio Sessions

April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and it's been a busy time in the WBGO Performance studio. The next generation of jazz players from metro area music programs has been visiting Michael Bourne on Afternoon Jazz. Here are some highlights:

First up, the SUNY-Purchase Jazz Endeavor came to WBGO on April 9th. The group features recipients of the James Moody Scholarship.
Hear them play.

Today, we featured the students from Manhattan School of Music.

Manhattan Scool of Music

Check out the Manhattan School of Music Ensemble.

The New School, tutored by bassist Reggie Workman, came to WBGO.
The New School

Listen to The New School Jazz Ensemble.

Tune in Wednesday, April 30th at 8pm. I'm your host for a performance of Combo Nuvo, featuring faculty and students from the NYU School of Music.
This is a collaboration between WBGO and the Clive Davis School for Recorded Music at NYU. Special thanks to Jim Anderson and Dave Schroeder.
And finally, on May 20th, WBGO presents students from the Berklee College of Music on Midday Jazz with Rhonda Hamilton. So much for just one month of jazz appreciation. WBGO loves this music year-round. And you?

Legends of Jazz - 2007 NEA Jazz Masters

2007 NEA Jazz Masters

April is Jazz Appreciation Month. One of the many cool things about the Smithsonian's monthlong celebration has been online. The creators of the LEGENDS OF JAZZ PBS series put together a one-hour web special, hosted by 2007 NEA Jazz Master Ramsey Lewis, that features conversations with and music by NEA jazz royalty - pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi, trombonist Curtis Fuller, singer Jimmy Scott, Basie-veteran Frank Wess, and saxophonist Phil Woods. Nancy Wilson, herself an NEA Jazz Master, talks with Ramsey Lewis about his own half-century career. Find it here.

Great Live Moments - Coming Monday, March 31st

Make plans to visit the WBGO Blog on Monday. We'll be presenting Great Live Moments - selected material from WBGO's extensive archive of broadcast recordings. Our blog will showcase one song per weekday for five consecutive weeks. Dexter Gordon, James Moody, Jim Hall, Michel Camilo, and Roy Hargrove - and that's just the first week. WBGO celebrates a birthday in April, which coincidentally is Jazz Appreciation Month. We've been recording great jazz for 29 years, and we want to share some found moments from the jazz vault with you. So come back Monday.
