Veronica Swift and Emmet Cohen Pay a Visit to Singers Unlimited with Michael Bourne

Bill Westmoreland

Veronica Swift didn’t have to go far in search of jazz exposure: she grew up going on weekend gigs with her parents, singer Stephanie Nakasian and pianist Hod O’Brien. Singing appealed to her as a child; she even recorded albums at that age, beginning with Veronica’s House of Jazz.

Swift’s new album, which Mack Avenue will release on Aug. 30, is Confessions. The recording features her backed by two fine piano trios, alternately led by Benny Green and Emmet Cohen. To share a taste of the album, and promote an appearance at Birdland, Swift and Cohen dropped by our studio to talk with Michael Bourne on Singers Unlimited.

Here’s one of the songs they performed — the Dave Frishberg and Bob Dorough tune “I’m Hip,” with a few of the references updated for a millennial crowd.
