  • “Dominic Smith & The B.A.D. Trio - A Tribute To Wynton Kelly” Dominic Smith, drums Bob Butta, piano Amy Shook, bass Join us for a tribute to one of the all-time greats: Jazz Pianist Wynton Kelly, who was famous for his tenure in the Miles Davis Quintet as well as for his own trio which he led through the 60’s. This trio with bassist Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb was captured on many classic recordings with Wes Montgomery, Hank Mobley, Joe Henderson and many others, some of which were recorded at the Famous Ballroom here in Baltimore organized by the Left Bank Jazz Society. Pianist Bob Butta has been an in-demand sideman, soloist and accompanist on the D.C./Baltimore jazz scene for many years and is always guaranteed to swing hard and take no prisoners. Bob is a “jazz musician’s musician” having absorbed the history of Wynton Kelly, Red Garland, Bill Evans, Cedar Walton, and Thelonious Monk among others. Bob has worked with Sonny Fortune, Sonny Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, Curtis Fuller, Gary Bartz, Junior Cook, Bill Hardman, Clifford Jordan, Buster Williams, Eddie Daniels, Stanley Turrentine, Roy Haynes, Jimmy Cobb, Freddie Hubbard, Dave Liebman, Woody Shaw, Johnny Coles and Wallace Roney as well as countless local musicians. Bassist Amy Shook is one of the most in-demand acoustic bassists in the mid-Atlantic, coveted for her huge sound and infectious, driving groove. In addition to being a premier performing and recording artist, a multi-instrumentalist (acoustic bass, electric bass, violin, viola, and cello), she is an accomplished composer, and her personality truly comes through in her writing. Amy co-leads the all-women powerhouse trio the 3D Jazz Trio (3Divas), with drummer Sherrie Maricle and pianist Jackie Warren and also the Shook/Russo 4tet, a band she started in 2004 with her husband, tenor saxophonist Pat Shook, and drummer Frank Russo. For more info on Amy, check out www.amyshook.com Drummer Dominic Smith has been a fixture on the jazz scene for more than 30 years, playing with the cream of the crop of local players as well as visiting musicians from New York and elsewhere. Dominic has appeared as a sideman on more than 50 recordings. His hard-swinging groove, use of dynamics and rhythmic subtleties have been utilized by such jazz notables as Eric Alexander, Harold Mabern, James Williams, Charlie Byrd, Phil Woods, Gary Thomas, Jim Snidero, Kenny Rankin, Dennis Irwin, Ray Bryant, Keter Betts, Charles McPherson and George Garzone to name a few. • New Camerata Opera announces that tickets are now on sale for performances of Cav + Pag, a bold and innovative adaptation of two classic verismo operas performed with a chamber orchestra, on September 23, 25, 30 and October 2, 2021 at 8pm at The Muse Brooklyn, a cavernous, converted industrial warehouse in Bushwick at 350 Moffat St., Brooklyn, NY. Tickets are $40 and are now on sale at https://www.newcamerataopera.org/cavpag. This 90-minute adaptation retains the most essential elements of each opera and places the role of Cavalleria Rusticana's Santuzza at the center, with Pagliacci's play-within-a-play paralleling her own crisis. The performance will feature New York-area artists accompanied by a nine-piece chamber orchestra (five string players, flute, oboe, bassoon, and piano). The creative team notes this production is "...not your grandpa's Cavalleria/Pagliacci but Cav + Pag, a distinct musical and dramatic entity that draws on the best of those twin masterworks to deliver a streamlined, intimate and powerful evening in the theater." Cav + Pag September 23, 25, 30 and October 2, 2021 at 8:00pm, The Muse Brooklyn Cav + Pag is an operatic fusion of the traditional double bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci. Developed by Director John de los Santos, Music Director Samuel McCoy, and internationally-renowned Dramaturg Cori Ellison, Cav + Pagseamlessly intertwines the characters, stories, and music, treating the audience to a super-condensed look at these classic verismo operas. Composed by Pietro Mascagni and Ruggero Leoncavallo.  Directed by John de los Santos, music direction by Samuel McCoy, dramaturgy by Cori Ellison, costume design by Asa Benally, and lighting design by Emily Clarkson. Principal cast members include Erik Bagger, Chris Carr (Canio), Indira Mahajan, Megan Nielson (Santuzza), Samina Aslam, Maria Brea (Nedda), Lindell Carter, Victor Khodadad (Turiddu), Angky Budiardjono (Silvio), Stan Lacy (Tonio), Rashard Deleston (Beppe), Costas Tsourakis (Alfio), Leslie Middlebrook (Lucia), Eva Parr, Julia Tang (Lola). Chorus/covers include Roseanne Ackerly, Ryan Allais, Brian Alvarado, Rosa Betancourt, Linda Collazo, Nick Connolly, Brittany Fowler, Alkis Sarantinos. New Camerata Opera will be adhering to strict guidelines as outlined by the CDC and New York State regarding COVID-19. The protocols observed include proof of vaccination for attendees and performers, masks for attendees, and social distancing. For more information on the latest requirements to attend Cav + Pag, visit newcamerataopera.org/covid-policy. New Camerata Opera was founded with the mission of building new audiences for the art form through engaging, exciting and educational productions. The organization accomplishes this via three main initiatives: full-length operas presented at innovative and daring venues, newly arranged and adapted children's operas (Camerata Piccola), and originally commissioned short operatic films for presentation online (CamerataWorks). It is through these multifaceted operations that NCO has successfully brought countless new opera lovers into the cultural fold. The organization has been hailed as "the future of opera" and is one of the most consistently active and present opera companies in New York. For more information, visit newcamerataopera.org. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
