Tenant Groups Want Relief During Coronavirus Pandemic

Jonathan Westin
New York Communities For Change

A rent payment strike connected to coronavirus is planned for Friday along with a protest outside Governor Cuomo’s Manhattan office.

Jonathan Westin with a tenant’s group called New York Communities For Change says thousands of New Yorkers are pledging not to pay the rent as the calendar turns to May. Westin says more has to be done to help renters affected financially from coronavirus

“Renters need relief. There is no way people are going to be able to make rent when they don’t have a job. They don’t have money. They barely have enough money for food.”

Governor Cuomo has ordered a 90 day ban on evictions

“Suspending evictions just means that you will be evicted in three months. And We don’t think that’s a plan.”

Westin and others are calling on Governor Cuomo to cancel rent payments altogether during the pandemic.
