The Pulse: A Conversation with Cecily About Love, Self-Acceptance and 'Awakening'

Shervin Lainez

Cecily is a vocalist whose instrument truly mirrors her demeanor: tender, honest, and powerful. Since her 2018 album Songs of Love and Freedom was touted by Bandcamp as “The Best New Soul,” the music industry has been buzzing about her.

Cecily’s sound encompasses mid-century soul and jazz, ‘90s R&B, and re-imagined folk music. All of this, coupled with her poignant and relatable songwriting, puts her in a class that few artists today occupy — and makes her the perfect candidate for the first installment of The Pulse

Cecily has shared the stage with artists ranging from Gregory Porter to Becca Stevens, and she recently recorded a duet with José James for his forthcoming album. She is an artist who moves with intention and care — making certain that every lyric she writes and word she sings is meant to uplift and inspire.

On Sunday, Feb. 2 at City Vineyard, Cecily will present an exclusive New York premiere of Awakening: The Visual EP, a short film about a young couple’s love story and a young woman’s journey of self-love, underscored by her music. Cecily will also perform songs from her award-winning projects Awakening Pt. 1 and Songs of Love and Freedom with her acoustic trio.
