Plenty of Potholes on New Jersey Roadways

pothole

You don't have to travel very far to find potholes on New Jersey roadways.

New Jersey Department of Transportation spokeswoman Judy Drucker says it's shaping up to be one of the worst pothole seasons in years. State crews tackled nearly 35,000 of them last month.

"We've had frequent snow storms very early this winter. We had heavy rains, severe swings in the temperature, so it's been pretty rough on our roads. We've begin our statewide annual pothole campaign this year specifically because of that."

If you spot a pothole, Drucker says you can go on the Transportation Department's website or call 1-800-POTHOLE to report it.

"Within two to three days you can expect that the pothole will be repaired. If in fact it's being reported by the State Police, it may be then considered an emergency situation so within a few hours one of our teams will be out there fixing those holes."

Crews often tamp asphalt in the pothole as a temporary measure, but the state also has 11 pothole filling machines to make more durable repairs.

The state spends about two million dollars on pothole repairs each year.
