NYC, Verizon Reach Deal on Low-Income Broadband

New York City has reached a deal with Verizon to provide broadband internet service to more low income New Yorkers.

Mayor de Blasio says the city reached an agreement with Verizon to address disparities that low-income residents face. The city’s head lawyer, Jim Johnson, says Verizon will expand broadband Fios service to 500,000 New Yorkers, including those in NYCHA buildings and neighborhoods hardest hit by coronavirus.

“The pandemic has only underscored how critical this need is. It’s needed for us to draw close together as family members. It’s needed for children to study,” said Johnson.

The settlement comes after the city sued, claiming Verizon failed to live up to its terms to build out its network in the city.
