NYC Schools Change Grading System Amid COVID-19 Affected School Year

New York City Department of Education

New York City is changing its grading system for the more than one million students learning at home because of coronavirus. Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza says high school students can take a passing letter grade or a simple pass.

“If the student opts to take a pass, then it does not impact the GPA. It just shows credit has been earned.”

High schoolers have until January to complete outstanding course work.  Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade will get either a "Meeting Standards" or "Needs Improvement" grade.

The middle school will have those two options as well along with a “Course in Progress” option.  Children having difficulty will be enrolled in summer and fall support programs.  Carranza says the goal is not to fail anyone.  Meanwhile, Mayor Bill de Blasio promises seniors a virtual graduation.

“We’re going to do one big celebration of New York City’s high school seniors. We’re going to make is something very special.”
