Newark Unveils Mural Honoring Grammy Winning Artist Wyclef Jean

Officials in NJ’s largest city were joined by Grammy winning musician producer, and Newark native, Wyclef Jean today to unveil the first of a five-part music themed mural series.

The project in partnership with Prudential Center’s GRAMMY Museum Experience, Prudential Financial Newark Arts, and Yendor Arts.  Jean, who is portrayed in the mural, says as a kid in Newark it was one of his teachers that introduced him to the music that changed his life.

major and got a chance to travel the world. Now, all of this music that I’m telling you about I am producing. From me to go from to Lil Wayne to Shakira to Carlos Santana, I would never be able to do this if I didn’t understand the fundamental of music as art that’s universal.”

Jean, says he hopes that kids throughout Newark will see themselves reflected in the mural. The artwork is titled Key To Life by international artist Camille Coté, also known as FABS, and is located in the city’s West Ward in the Fairmount neighborhood. 

Alexandra Hill began her work with WBGO in June of 2012 in the news department. A graduate of the Rutgers Newark journalism program, Alexandra was also a student of WBGO News Director Doug Doyle. Alexandra has since become the lead general assignment reporter, afternoon news anchor, and producer of the award winning live call in show Newark Today. Since working for WBGO Alexandra has covered politics in and around Newark including the 2014 mayoral campaign of Mayor Ras Baraka as well as the senate campaigns of former Newark Mayor and now U.S. Senator Cory Booker in both 2013 and 2014. Alexandra also covers a host of human-interest stories, and has been recognized by the New York Association Of Black Journalists for her piece entitled Sheltering Newark’s Homeless.
