Drummer Jack DeJohnette, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and bassist Matthew Garrison have personal history going back more than 40 years.

As a collective trio, they released an acclaimed album on ECM a few years ago, and have kept stretching their horizons on tour. They’ll headline a concert at Central Park SummerStage on Sat., June 15, in partnership with WBGO.

Last week, WBGO's Nate Chinen and Jazz Night in America caught up with Jack at his home in upstate New York, to talk about the special collaborative quality of the group.

“It’s a family affair,” reflects DeJohnette, a 2012 NEA Jazz Master. “I think the one thing that is really important is that everybody, all three of us, are ‘heart’ musicians. So everything that comes through is from the heart. It just cuts through the psychological, the intellectual. That’s there, but the intellectual and the feeling part and the spiritual part are all intertwined.”

Central Park SummerStage was newly renovated for the 2019 season

Jack DeJohnette, Ravi Coltrane and Matthew Garrison will perform at Central Park SummerStage on Saturday, June 15. The free concert begins at 7 p.m., with an opening set by harpist Brandee Younger.

WBGO’s Rhonda Hamilton will host the evening, and our own Nate Chinen is moderating a special preshow panel, titled Jazz on the Cusp, with Younger and Grammy-winning jazz historian Ashley Kahn. To RSVP for the panel, email rsvp@cityparksfoundation.org.
