Gabrielle Stravelli Performs the Songs of Willie Nelson on Singers Unlimited, and at Birdland

Shervin Lainez

Gabrielle Stravelli is a delightful singer of... everything.

Her newest album, Pick Up My Pieces, is all songs of Willie Nelson. She sings hits that he wrote for Ray Price (“Night Life”) and Patsy Cline (“Crazy”). She sings hits he recorded himself (“Always on My Mind” and “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground”). She sings the hits, and swings especially one of Willie’s funniest songs, “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.” Pat O’Leary played bass and was the album’s arranger.

Gabrielle sang songs from the album with Pat and pianist Joshua Richman on “Singers Unlimited” with Michael Bourne. She’ll be singing with her whole band on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. at Birdland.

Here is a taste from the session — a non-Willie selection, “Cake of My Childhood,” from Gabrielle's 2017 album Dream Ago.
