A change is coming to the leadership of Essex County College.

ECC President Dr. Anthony Munroe will be leaving to lead Manhattan Community College starting October 1.

Essex County College Executive Director Al Bundy says Dr. Munroe got the college through some accreditation problems.

“Those two areas where it was on probation he led the way, spearheaded the effort, along with the board of trustees and the college staff, to get the college off of probation,” said Bundy.

Once the pandemic hit, Munroe started the Tuition Free Program for Essential Workers.

Bundy also praised Munroe’s attention to students who immigrated to the U.S. as children.

“He was very articulate and concerned about what was going on with DACA students and Dreamers of course,” said Bundy, “and we have a number of students there.”

Dr. Munroe also launched a Food Pantry Program for students and a Student Wellness Center to provide counseling.

“Many of our students have a need for some counseling,” Bundy said, “(they) may come from homes sometimes where everybody doesn’t understand what it takes to be a college student.”
