Carmen Lundy Stops By Singers Unlimited to Share a Taste of 'Modern Ancestors'

Carmen Lundy. Singer. Songwriter. Arranger. Keyboardist. Percussionist. Painter. Sculptor. Photographer. Designer. She’s all of the above (and then some) on Modern Ancestors, her newest album on her own label, Afrasia.

She’s been a vocal presence on WBGO since her first album, Good Morning Kiss, in 1985 — when her song “Time Is Love”  was a hit on every shift.

She’s singing this week, Thursday Dec. 19 through Sunday the 22nd, at The Jazz Standard.  She came by WBGO and recorded an interview and performance for Singers Unlimited. I will spotlight Carmen and her band on the air at noon on Sunday, Jan. 5. In the meantime, enjoy our session above.

Here is Carmen in our studio performing a playful original from the album, "Jazz on TV."

And here is her version of "Burden Down, Burden Down."

Carmen Lundy Band: Piano - Julius Rodriguez; Guitar - Andrew Renfroe; Bass - Kenny Davis; Drums - Kassa Overall; Percussion - Mayra Casales

He is the host of the Singers Unlimited Podcast by WBGO Studios. Previously, he hosted the popular Singers Unlimited (1985-2022). He also hosted the equally popular Blues Break for several years. Michael is a senior contributor to Down Beat, with the magazine since 1969. Doctor Bourne earned a PhD in Theatre from Indiana University -- which comes in handy when he's a theatre critic for the WBGO Journal.
