A 'Bright New Day' Dawns For Bassist Charnett Moffett and His Band, on Morning Jazz

Charnett Moffett feels that each musical experience has provided a bright new day — from his early years in the Moffett Family Band, led by his legendary drummer father Charles, to recording in the ‘80s with both Branford and Wynton Marsalis.

A bassist at home on both upright and electric instruments, Moffett has also had deep associations with Ornette Coleman, Stanley Jordan, Pharoah Sanders and the Manhattan Jazz Quintet — along with 15 acclaimed releases as a leader.

For the release of his new album, Bright New Day (Motéma Music), Charnett came to Morning Jazz to share his limitless and fretless imagination. Performing in our studio with pianist Brian Jackson, violinist Scott Tixier, guitarist and vocalist Jana Herzen and drummer Malik Koli, he made it a preview to tonight’s celebration at Birdland Theatre in New York.

Here is the band performing "Netting" in our studio:

And here is a piece called "Holy Spirit":

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
