Traffic moves along 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan on Jan. 25, 2018. After decades of efforts by transportation advocates, the state of New York has approved a plan to add congestion pricing to the city, charging drivers who enter a designated zone of Manhattan.

Preliminary MTA collected data shows traffic is down in the congestion pricing zone of Manhattan.

The MTA says there were some 43-thousand fewer drivers on the average weekday last week in the congestion zone. That's a seven and a half percent decrease in traffic for a typical weekday at this time of year. It was the first week since the nine dollar toll to drive south of 60th Street went into effect. The MTA's Juliette Michaelson.

"Overall this has absolutely met our expectations. The numbers are impressive"

The MTA says getting to Manhattan from New Jersey via the GW Bridge, Lincoln and Holland tunnels took 30 to 40 percent less time. The MTA saw a slight uptick in subway riders. Ridership on MTA express buses was up six percent.
