A bill is being introduced in the New York City Council that would allow for paid sick time to take care of pets
Councilmember Shaun Abreu's legislation would be an amended version of the current law that requires most companies in New York City to give employees paid leave for personal sick time and to care for sick family members. Abreu would like to add in carrying for sick pets and pet surgeries under the sick time law without adding any additional sick days. It's unclear which animals would be covered but the bill refers to legal pets and companion animals.
