Pedestrians walk past a "Look!" sign on the crosswalk at the intersection of 42nd Street and Second Avenue in New York. Cities all over the country are looking for ways to get pedestrians to pay more attention.

the New York City DOT is highlighting the fact that many intersections are now safer for pedestrians with school starting up this week.

The DOT says crews have improved visibility for pedestrians at more than 300 intersections by removing obstructions including parked vehicles. this is called daylighting. Jackson Jackson Chabot [[ CHAH-BO ]] with the group Open Plans applauds says it's key to give drivers a clear sightline at intersections.

"Regardless New Yorkers, I know parking is tough to find, but the intersection is not a place to park. This is daylighting, daylighting here like the sunlight. but this is all about visibility."

The DOT says it's on pace to daylighting at one thousand intersections by the end of the year. More than half of pedestrian fatalities occur at intersections.
