George Santos leaves the Capitol after being expelled from the House of Representatives in Washington on Dec. 1, 2023.

Former New York Congressman George Santos is admitting guilt to a number of charges through a plea deal. He was in court in Central Islip today.

George Santos told the the judge he was "committed to making amends and learning from this experience." while pleading guilty to fraud, identity theft and other federal crimes. Afterward he struggled to hold back tears while apologizing to people he once represented.

"You also trusted me to represent you with honor and to uphold the values that are essential to our democracy. And In that regard, I have failed you."

U.S. District Attorney Breon Peace says Santos' Long Island and Queens constituents were deceived during Santos brief time in Congress before he was expelled.

"They came to learn that they were victims of a fraud of unprecedented proportion and they had to watch helplessly while Santos rode into Congress on a campaign of lies.

Santos faces a minimum of two years behind bars and must repay his victims as part of the plea deal. He'll be sentenced in February.
