Some families wait years to get a housing voucher only to find out many landlords won't accept them.

New York City residents are expected to find out soon whether they were chosen to get on the housing voucher wait list.

Public housing officials say 200-thousand New Yorkers have been picked for the Section 8 Housing Voucher waitlist. About 634 thousand applied. Those chosen will get an email in the coming days. Housing authority officials are expected to hand out up to one thousand vouchers per month. The federally funded program gives rental subsides to low income families looking for market rate homes. It’s been about a decade and a half since the city reopened the Section 8 waitlist. This is one way city officials are trying to address the housing shortage.
