New York City Mayor Eric Adams is unveiling a new plan to help New Yorkers with severe mental illness.

Mayor Adams is ordering the city’s first responders to send mentally ill New Yorkers on the streets and in the subway system to the hospital whether they volunteer or not to go.

“No more looking by or walking away. No more passing the buck. Going forward we will focus on action, care and compassion.”

Head of the New York Civil Liberties Union Donna Liberman criticized the mayor’s plan saying forcing people into treatment is a failed strategy in connecting people to long term care. The Coalition For The Homeless also criticized the mayor’s plan.
