There’s new legislation that would crackdown on social media advertisers targeting children in New York State.

State Senator Andrew Gounardes just introduced a bill that would ban targeted online advertising to social media accounts owned by anyone under the age of 18. It would also ban data collection of those accounts.

“Because a young person likes the color blue and puts it on their profile, that they should be bombarded by ads based on that data. There’s no reason the algorithm should be used to make money off these kids. It’s putting them in harms way.”

The bill is modeled off of a similar new law in California that got a lot of pushback from tech companies. The other part to his bill requires tech companies to allow parents to notify them for possible emergencies.
