Hochul Signs Voter Rights Act

Don Pollard

Voting rights are being expanded in New York State.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed a voting rights bill into law today that tries to prevent voter suppression, expands language assistance beyond the federal voting requirements and ensures barriers to accessing the polls are removed. Fulvia Vargas-De Leon with the Latino Justice organization says this is a win for those who don’t speak English.

“As communities in our state become more diverse, language continues to present a barrier to voters and this law takes important steps to bridge that gap to access.”

The bill is named after the civil rights icon John Lewis.
