Subway ridership numbers are going up in New York City but they are still far below pre-pandemic levels. The subway system hit two million riders this past Thursday, the highest daily total during the pandemic. However, ridership is still down 60 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels. Sarah Feinberg is the Interim President for New York City Transit.
“People want to come back to transit. They want to come back to their commute. They want to come back to their workplace and they will if the subways are safe from COVID, safe from crime and harassment.”
She says studies show there has been no COVID outbreaks linked to public transit around the world. Feinberg continues to call for more officers and mental health professionals to battle subway crime.
