On Monday, February 13, the life and writing of the late author Stanley Crouch was celebrated in an evening of performances and readings. The event, entitled “Victory Is Assured” after the title of Crouch’s posthumous collection of previously unpublished writing, was held at Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Wynton Marsalis, editor Glenn Mott and writer Jelani Cobb both spoke and read from Crouch’s work. In addition, there were performances from various ensembles, including: Christian McBride, Jeff “Tain” Watts and Cyrus Chestnut; Bill Charlap, Peter Washington and Kenny Washington; David Murray, Ray Anderson, Mark Dresser and Andrew Cyrille; as well as pianist Sean Mason and vocalist Tammy McCann.
