    Norma Miller 8.27.10

Working at WBGO has many great moments...And a few special moments. One of these special occasions came Friday 8/27 when the legendary Norma Miller came to chat. She shared early life stories like peering through the window at The Savoy (1932) while dancers moved to Chick Webb and his band. Then going home to serve "Jump Steady", a bathtub gin at rent parties during the Great Depression.  One of the original Lindy Hoppers, Norma danced around the world, was featured in movies, and later in life re-invented herself in the world of comedy, starting out with other newcomers like Flip Wilson, Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor. Norma Miller's incredible life has been captured by filmmaker John Biffar in "Queen Of Swing".  She stopped by to share a few of her unique life stories. You can tell from this 90 year young spirit that her dance continues with a rhythm most of us are ever after.

  • ABBEY LIVES and Abbey Lincoln (1930-2010) sings "Bird Alone" live on WBGO

August 15, 2010. Posted by Becca Pulliam.

WBGO broadcast Abbey Lincoln Live from the old Iridium, across from Lincoln Center in 1996.  Then in 2004, we sent her a track from that night, asking if we could post "Bird Alone" on wbgo.org as  a Great Live Moment for our 25th anniversary.  She called and said either "it's the best I ever sang it" or "it's as good as I've ever sung it" - I think  she said the former - and granted us permission.  Her musicians are Marc Carey, Michael Bowie, Aaron Walker.  Thank you, Abbey Lincoln.
