• WBGO Is Live At The Newport Jazz Festival 2012

    WBGO is back in Newport, with host Josh Jackson broadcasting live from the 2012 Jazz Festival from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. This year's festival is packed to the gills with fresh-faced and veteran talent, so will be exciting.

    Our new sister HD2 station, The Jazz Bee, is also playing a special selection of recordings by the more than forty artists and groups who are performing at Newport this year. So listen to Newport's finest, including Jack DeJohnette, The Bad Plus, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band live on WBGO-FM, or to their best recordings on The Jazz Bee, take your pick!

    We will also stream live video from the festival, in partnership with our friends at NPRMusic.org and WGBH. A full rundown of the concerts we will broadcast is below. Enjoy every minute of Newport 2012 with WBGO!

    Pianist Bill Charlap talks with WBGO's Rhonda Hamilton about the 92nd Street Y's Jazz in July festival, which runs from July 16th through 26th. Charlap is the festival's artistic director.

    On July 17, Michael Bourne will host a WBGO member's event at the 92Y's concert with the Freddy Cole Quartet and the Bill Charlap Trio, with vocalist Ernie Andrews and saxophonist Houston Person as special guests. WBGO members get the best seats in the house for this event, and will be treated to a reception with Bourne and the artists after the performance.


  • NJ Youth Theatre's "Smokey Joe's Cafe" with Michael Bourne

    Michael Bourne talks with Cynthia Meryl, director of the New Jersey Youth Theatre's production of "Smokey Joey's Cafe," and cast members. The musical showcases rock 'n' roll compositions by songwriters Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, which will run from July 18th through 21 in the Alexander Kasser Theater at Montclair State University, and from July 26th through 29th at the Sitnick Theater  at Lackland Performing Arts Center in Hackettstown, New Jersey.

    WBGO's Michael Bourne interviews a Canadian jazz legend who performed and recorded for an extended period with Benny Goodman, among others.  In this interview, the vibraphonist -- who won this year's Oscar Peterson Award at FIJM -- talks about his encounter with movie star Ava Gardner, receiving Goodman's "ray" of disapproval, and working with Oscar Peterson.
