Several thousand New York City school employees are not getting paid after the coronavirus vaccine mandate for school staff went into effect today.

Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter says the coronavirus vaccination rate is now at 95 percent among full time Department of Education staff following a surge in vaccinations over the weekend.

“It means there is an actual bubble of safety around our children in their school buildings. With 100 percent of adults in buildings vaccinated, New York City schools are the safest places to be.”

A few thousand school employees have refused the shot. They are on unpaid leave, but the chancellor says they are welcomed back once they get vaccinated.
