I first saw Esperanza during the BET tribute to Prince, which my understanding is he had requested her. I next saw on the CNN website and later recongnized her as the electric basist from the Prince tribute. She had then caught my interest so I Googled her. I found out she played for the president during his reception of his nobel peace prize and other engagements. So, I had come to the conclusion that I had to see her for myself. I was driving in my car on the way to work, listnening to WBGO and I heard that she was going to be in New Jersey. I Googled her again for show dates and sure enough she was performing at the Bergen Community College for only 35.00. When I arrived there and found my way to the auditorium and my seat, it was the most itimate setting I could imagine. I had never been to BCC, so I did not know what to expect. It was a small theather may 100 seats with theater accoustics. You could hear a pin hit the ground. Esperanza played for 90 minutes straight without a break and passionately. I have never seen anyone play a instrument with so much passion. The only other musician that I think plays as passionately is Keith Jarret and I could be wrong. I picked up the CD after the show and waited maybe 20 minutes to see if she would come out and possibly autograph it for me but to no avail. But when I got home and listened to the CD, it was the same music but not done as intense as the show. She had refined the music and made it more intense in her show. But it was very gratifying knowing that we got to see her now and maybe in the future it will harder to get tickets to see and never again in such a small setting. The only other comment is maybe we have found the next Quince Jones. Who knows?.
