Fly is part jazz trio, and part music collective. Five years after their debut recording, saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Jeff Ballard return with their second effort, Sky & Country. Hear the lovely ballad “CJ,” from bassist Larry Grenadier.
Sky & Country is available on ECM Records.
Bonus audio:
Hear a listening session with New York Times music critic Ben Ratliff.

Ben Ratliff said in the listening session that no one really noticed the first Fly album and people don’t talk about it. That may be true in some circles, but among college jazz students, it was a pretty big deal. I know a number of different musicians in their early twenties who were very impacted by that album and have even transcribed tunes from it and performed them on gigs and recitals. No doubt they’ll all be really happy to hear the sophomore album. Thanks for a great podcast!
