Hear Two Young Trios From Montreal, Gentiane MG and the Daniel Arthur Trio

Gentiane MG Trio

Montreal is home to the largest jazz festival in the world, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. So it’s no surprise that the city is also the home to one of the most prestigious music schools in Canada, The Schulich School of Music of McGill University. Pianist Jean-Michel Pilcis Associate Professor and Jazz Area Chair at McGill.  We have performances by several of the university's star pupils.

Gentianediscovered the piano at five years old and never let it go. In 2011, McGill University awarded her a $15,000 Schulich Scholarship to achieve her undergraduate degree in jazz performance, which she completed in 2014. That’s also when she created her own project, Gentiane MG Trio, with fellow McGill students: bassist Levi Dover and drummer Louis-Vincent Hamel.

Gentiane received the prestigious Graduate Excellence Fellowship Award and returned to McGill University to pursue a Master's Degree in Jazz Performance. She has an active presence in Montreal’s thriving jazz scene.

The Daniel Arthur Trio represents a new generation of creative music.  Daniel is a pianist and composer,  and he's joined by bassist Ethan Cohn and drummer Eric Maillet. They met at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University in October of 2014. They describe their music as “contemporary classical music composed for a small jazz group setting.” The trio released its first EP in November 2015 and has been performing locally in Montreal, including at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in 2016.
