This week's Playdate celebrates some of WBGO's live highlights with The Jazz Messengers: pianist Cedar Walton, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and the man himself, drummer and bandleader Art Blakey.

The Turtle Island String Quartet also plays Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments," and the Three Baritone Saxophone Band plays Johnny Mandel's "I Want To Live" from the 1958 film of the same name.

Pianist and vocalist Shirley Horn sings "The Old Country" in a concert at Florida Memorial College in Miami. The concert was so good, she released the performance on her album The Garden of the Blues.

New Years Eve 1990 at Catalina's in Hollywood, California. John Beasley, piano; John Leftwitch, bass; Bob Sheppard, t. sax; Phil Ranelin, trbn; Freddie Hubbard, flugel horn; Ernie Watts, t. sax

We close out this Playdate with two Thelonious Monk compositions. The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band played an all-Monk showcase dedicated to Mrs. Nellie Monk in November 1999. We're featuring drummer Dennis Mackrel's arrangement of "Off Minor."

Closing out, it's trombonist Ray Anderson and his Pocket Brass playing Monk's "I Mean You" at the 1997 Iowa City Jazz Fesitval. Stream the full audio by clicking the link below.

Play on, and play out! And stay tuned for more treats on Playdate.
