Dizzy Gillespie influenced and mentored countless musicians throughout his 50+ years in the business. For this Playdate, we're featuring players who graduated from the school of Dizzy.

We kick things off with vocalist Carmen McRae with special guest, tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims, at the Blue Note in New York City in 1983. This concert was eventually released in 1995 as McRae's live recording For Lady Day, on Novus.

Then we dive into Dizzy's legacy with The Modern Jazz Quartet, Paquito D'Rivera, and The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band led by Jon Faddis. To hear the full audio of Paquito D'Rivera playing the Dizzy Gilespie classic, "Tanga," click the link below.

Next is a hard-swinging performance by the Terence Blanchard / Donald Harrison Group, circa 1984/85, featuring the late pianist Mulgrew Miller.

Closing out is a special duet performance with bassists Ray Brown (1926-2002) and Christian McBride, born in 1972. We also hear directly from Christian, who was 22 years old at the time of this recording, about what it felt like to play with Ray Brown at the 1994 Monterey Jazz Festival.

"Imagine a truck with a Rolls Royce engine. And one that could kiss the ground like a sportscar," says Christian.

Check back in with us soon to hear the duet and extended interview.
