Playdate #5 is all about music from, and inspired by, the Crescent City.

We hear excerpts from The Dirty Dozen Brass Band on New Year's Eve, 1993. To hear the full tunes, click here.

Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy kicks things off, performing Earl McIntyre's arrangement of Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1989. This performance embodies an alternate take on the brass band tradition of New Orleans.

Next up is vocalist Bobbby McFerrin's 1999 reunion concert with the New Orleans-based band, Astral Project. To read and hear more from this concert, click here.

Playdate #5 continues with rare tape from from the 1982 New Orleans Jazz Festival. Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, who had just been signed to CBS Records, presents an elaborate rendtion of "Surrey With The Fringe On Top."

The second half of Playdate kicks off with a live broadcast from the New Showcase Lounge in New Orleans. Saxophonist Wess "Warmdaddy" Anderson's version of "Mood Indigo" gives me chills. Vibraphonist Stefon Harris was also in the band that night and is featued on Playdate playing Milt Jackson's "Bag's Groove." To hear the full audio, click here.

Next, accordionist Queen Ida and her Bon Temps Zydeco Band pick up the pace, getting to the true spirit of New Orleans music, having a good time! Laisser les bons temps rouler...

Closing out this week's Playdate is the Either/Orchestra featuring Playdate host, Matt Wilson, on drums, John Medeski on the organ, Tom Halter on trumpet, and Doug Yates on alto saxophone.
