Playdate #4 features two wonderful sides of Max Roach, recorded live at WBGO. In May of 1987, the drummer visited our studios to present a solo drum offering, a set with his quartet, and a set with his Double Quartet (his quartet + strings.)

Playdate #4 opens with this Max Roach solo and gives a taste of his Double Quartet playing "Bright Moments" by Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Playdate #4 also features two selections recorded at Tower Records on lower Broadway in New York City. James Newton plays a solo flute piece, and drummer Bob Moses leads a band featuring Newton, violinist John Blake, and pianist Geri Allen.

Saxophonist Michael Brecker then performs live at Manhattan's Iridium nightclub, at its original location 63rd Street and 8th Avenue, in 1996. This selection, "Nothing Personal," is a high-energy monster of a tune written by Don Grolnick which can also be heard on Brecker's 1987 self-titled album released on the Impulse! label.

The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, which made its debut on Playdate #3, returns this week with their take on Duke Ellington's "The Mooche," as arranged by Jim McNeely. Then, we hop across the country to three outdoor West Coast jazz festivals.

Enjoy the positive vibes of vocalist Kurt Elling in Oregon, violinist Stéphane Grappelli in Monterey, and drummer Shelly Manne in Long Beach, California. Sunny skies must mean it's time for another Playdate with WBGO.
