WBGO's Playdate With Matt Wilson: Show #2

Playdate Show 2

Playdate with Matt Wilson is back with a second installment! The special series is now under way, highlighting gems from the WBGO archive of live recording Miss a show? Catch up on shows 134, 5, 6, 7, 8  and explore our web extras.

Show #2 kicks off with Bill Lee and the Natural Spiritual Orchestra from inside WBGO studios, live to the nation, on New Year's Eve 1986. Bill Lee's band was performing music from the soundtrack to the film She's Gotta Have it, written and directed by Bill's son, Spike Lee, and released the same year.

You can hear the voice of WBGO's Jim Luce back announcing the Clifford Jordan Quartet at the Village Vanguard, and WBGO's Dorthaan Kirk introducing Hilton Ruiz in the Vibration Society at Rutgers University-Newark.

Playdate is proud to provide the story behind the title of Jane Ira Bloom's "Oshumare" as told by Jane; the Billy Hart record Oshumare is a favorite of host Matt Wilson. To read more on Chick Corea and Gary Burton's collaboration in 1985, click here.

Preservation of the 1980s material from the WBGO archive is by Yujin Cha, funded by a Grammy Foundation grant. WBFO in Buffalo provided the Corea and Burton set to WBGO's American Jazz Radio Festival. We'd like to thank recording engineer Duke Markos, Rebecca Weller at Midummer Night Swing 1998, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts for making the Chico O'Farrill recording possible. Also, thanks to Greg Drusdow for providing the names of the members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Happy centennial, Sun Ra!
