WBGO's Playdate: Chick Corea and Gary Burton

Chick Corea Gary Burton Playdate

This is the first web extra from Playdate with Matt Wilson, Show #2.

Welcome to Playdate, WBGO's new series of highlights from our live recordings archive. We can't fit everything on the air, so we've taken to the web!

In this extra, we travel back to Buffalo State College in 1985, when pianist Chick Corea played his song "Armando's Rhumba" with vibraphonist Gary Burton for the first time, on the first night of their national tour.  Click on the link above to hear this performance.

First released on Chick's album My Spanish Heart, the track is an homage to his father (like his father, who was also a jazz musician, Chick's first name is Armando). The song has since become a classic in Corea's repertoire and is widely played by other jazz musicians.

Tune in to Playdate with Matt Wilson on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. to hear more from this concert, plus Hilton Ruiz with Vibration Society, Sun Ra, Bill Lee and the Natural Spiritual Orchestra, Clifford Jordan, and more.
