Each year, International Women in Jazz honors a young musician at its annual Festival. This year, 11 year-old pianist Leonieke Scheuble was honored with the Youth in Action Award and played a rousing trio of songs inspired by her hero, Ray Charles.  Leonieke’s dad told me that at age 4, never having had a piano lesson, she saw the film, “Ray,” came home, sat down at the family piano and played “Georgia” in Ray’s style. Can’t wait to hear what’s in store for her if this is how she sounds at 11.

So nice to meet you Fran and thank you Fran for all of this! Leonieke was so happy to see it!
I’ve been looking through your photographs, and of course I’m familiar with those that are published in Hot House too and I’m so impressed. Thank you again for your dedication in documenting the jazz greats of today in such an artistic manner.
