Bassist Chris Brubeck recounted how his dad wrote a song, “Marian McPartland” on the airplane as he travelled to Washington to tape Marian’s NPR show, “Piano Jazz.” Marian, he said, heard the song and played a gorgeous duet with his dad on her first hearing. On drums, Jimmy McPartland’s grandson, Doug Kassel; on piano, Bill Charlap. Marian’s life and career were celebrated at the 92 Street Y on March 20–what would have been the 96th birthday.
