Carol Sudhalter arrived at the opening jam session of the International Women in Jazz Festival at St Peter’s Church in Manhattan on April 9, opened her horn case, and just joined in. No bother going to the front of the room. That set the tone for the entire day, with music and musicians everywhere.

When I saw the long list of singers and knew I had only 15 minutes, I started thinking…but when the vocalist started in on ‘Don’t Go To Strangers’, I just had to pull out the horn, couldn’t resist blowing two a sections on that great tune!! Hopefully that 40-second interlude didn’t take anything away from the proceedings. The acoustics were warm and welcoming!
